The Department of Physical Science at Government College of Teacher Education (GCTE), Thiruvananthapuram, hosted the combined inauguration of the Physical Science Association and the Science Club on August 25, 2025. This momentous occasion was conducted in the college Seminar Hall at 1:30 PM. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from faculty members and students, marking a new beginning of academic and co-curricular endeavors. The inauguration aimed to foster scientific spirit, creativity, and collaborative learning among future educators.
Welcome and Opening
The formal session began with a prayer song rendered by Adwaith Narayan, a first-year B.Ed. Physical Science student, which set a serene and respectful tone for the gathering. Following this, Prof. (Dr.) Anju I, Vice Principal of GCTE, delivered the Welcome Address. In her speech, she extended a warm greeting to the Chief Guest, Principal, faculty, and students. She also highlighted the objectives of the Physical Science Association and the Science Club while acknowledging the remarkable achievements of the Chief Guest, Sri. K. Suresh Kumar.
Presidential Address
The Presidential Address was delivered by Prof. (Dr.) A.V. Sujith, Principal of GCTE. He emphasized the uniqueness and diversity of the Department of Physical Science, reflecting on its rich contributions in the past. He expressed optimism that the newly inaugurated association and club would continue this legacy of excellence and provide a platform for meaningful academic and co-curricular activities.
Lighting of the Lamp Ceremony
The traditional Lighting of the Lamp ceremony followed, symbolizing the dispelling of ignorance and the spreading of knowledge. The lamp was lit by the Chief Guest, along with the Principal, Vice Principal, Dr. RajaShree K (Associate Professor, Natural Science), Dr. Sajeena S (Lecturer, Educational Technology), and Harini Vinod (First-year B.Ed. Physical Science student). This moment marked the formal commencement of the association’s journey.
Felicitations
The event then moved on to felicitations. Dr. RajaShree K, one of the conveners of the Science Club, spoke about the pivotal role of science clubs in nurturing curiosity, critical thinking, and scientific temperament among students. Dr. Sajeena S also delivered a felicitation, conveying her heartfelt wishes for the successful functioning of the association and expressing her confidence in the students’ ability to uphold its vision.
Unveiling of the Association Name
A key highlight of the programme was the unveiling of the Association’s name. The Chief Guest, Sri. K. Suresh Kumar, officially announced the name “IGNIS”, symbolizing Fire, Energy, and Passion. This revelation was accompanied by a captivating video presentation. The deeper significance of the name was then elaborated upon by Harini Vinod, who explained how it encapsulates the zeal and determination of budding science educators.
Inaugural Address by the Chief Guest
The most memorable part of the event was the Inaugural Address by the Chief Guest, Sri. K. Suresh Kumar. In his engaging and thought-provoking speech, he shared modern methods and innovative techniques of teaching, underscoring their relevance in contemporary classrooms. His talk, rich with humor, anecdotes, and practical examples, left a lasting impact on the audience. The programme concluded with a Vote of Thanks proposed by Sivaprasad P. S., a first-year B.Ed. Physical Science student. Towards the end of the session, the Chief Guest captivated the gathering with a series of fascinating science experiments.
