THE INAUGURATION OF SOCIAL SCIENCE ASSOCIATION AND HIROSHIMA–NAGASAKI COMMEMORATION

On August 6, 2025 (Wednesday), the Government College of Teacher Education (GCTE), Thiruvananthapuram, conducted a combined programme commemorating Hiroshima Day and inaugurating the Social Science Association in the college Seminar Hall at 9:30 AM. The programme was conducted by the Social Science Department.
The event began with a solemn prayer by Avani V.S., followed by a welcome speech delivered by Remya Mol O.V. The presidential address was given by Prof. Dr. A.V. Sujith, Principal of GCTE, who highlighted the importance of remembering Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He spoke about how the tragic events of August 6 and 9, 1945, remind humanity of the devastating impact of war and the enduring need for peace and reconciliation.
As part of the day’s programme, a chart exhibition was also organized by the Social Science Department, featuring student-prepared visual displays depicting various aspects of the Second World War, the atomic bombings, and messages of peace, resilience, and global disarmament. Teachers and students actively visited the exhibition, engaging with the content and reflecting on the historical and humanitarian significance of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, as well as the broader themes of war and peace.
The chief guest, Dr. Deepu J.S., Associate Professor in History at Govt. College for Women, Vazhuthacaud, inaugurated the Social Science Association by revealing its name – “CIVITAS”, a Latin term meaning Citizenship. In his keynote address, he provided a detailed and thought-provoking historical overview of the Second World War, the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and their long-term global consequences. He emphasized the importance of understanding history to build a peaceful future and encouraged future teachers to educate the next generation about the values of empathy, justice, and civic responsibility.
Felicitations were offered by Dr. Rahul V.R., Assistant Professor at GCTE, and Dr. Usha Rani K., Head of the Social Science Department.
In his felicitation, Dr. Rahul V.R. congratulated the Social Science Department for successfully organizing a meaningful and historically significant event. He applauded the choice of the association’s name, “CIVITAS”, which beautifully encapsulates the core values of active citizenship and democratic participation.
Dr. Usha Rani K., in her felicitation, shared her appreciation for the collective effort that went into organizing the event. She expressed pride in the department’s initiative and encouraged students to actively engage in the activities of the association.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Chandralekha, who expressed heartfelt gratitude to all dignitaries, faculty members, and students for their presence and participation.The event concluded with the announcement of upcoming competitions, including a poster-making competition and a quiz competition related to Hiroshima–Nagasaki Day.
